More than a dozen dogs with parvo taken in by a tri-state shelter

LEBANON, Ohio (WXIX) – An animal shelter in Warren County has taken in more than a dozen dogs with parvo.

The dogs come from a local hoarding case. Fifteen dogs are in a quarantine area at the Warren County Humane Society and Adoption Center. The staff also plans to bring in the remaining eight puppies.

Parvo is a serious canine disease and can be fatal. A new mother and her newborn puppies, each battling parvos, were among the dogs brought to the shelter’s quarantine area.

“Everyone has to wear a gown, gloves and boots to go in there,” said human rights director Joanne Hurley. We have our vet on (this) right now. He is talking to other colleagues about the best way to handle this and we will just cross our fingers and hope for the best.”

Hurley, as Humane Director in Warren County, can file charges against someone who neglects or abuses animals. He said this case does not warrant charges because the owner surrendered the animals.

“In a hoarding situation, it’s often really good people who feel really overwhelmed,” Hurley said. “They love to their own detriment.”

The shelter said medical expenses will be high for the dogs. Anyone who wants to donate for his treatment can visit the shelter’s website.
